About the Author: Piers Anthony

Piers Anthony, is one of the most enduring voices in speculative fiction. With a career spanning nearly six decades and over 200 published novels, his influence has shaped generations of readers. Born in England and immigrating to the United States at the age of six, Anthony’s journey is as storied as the worlds he creates—rooted in resilience, curiosity, and a lifelong bond with the natural world.

Much of his storytelling is deeply personal. Writing from his horse farm in rural Florida, Anthony’s life with animals—particularly horses—has left a distinct mark on his work. The Apprentice Adept series, one of his most visionary and personal creations, is infused with the rhythms and realities of life on horseback. Scenes like Stile carefully inspecting Battle Ax from head to hoof before a ride reflect a true horseman’s instinct—grounded, practiced, and deeply respectful of the animal. That detail comes from experience: Anthony and his first wife raised their daughters alongside two family horses, Sky Blue and Misty. Together, they would ride as a family, building memories that later surfaced—often unconsciously—in the texture of his stories. It’s no wonder the scenes feel so real. They are.

But Anthony’s real life is also filled with unexpected adventure. As a young boy fleeing the outbreak of World War II, he crossed the Atlantic aboard the SS Excalibur. For his sixth birthday, he was given a harmonica—an instrument he couldn’t quite play, but carried proudly through the ship’s corridors, unwittingly annoying fellow passengers with his endless tootling. Among them? None other than Edward, the abdicated king of England, traveling to his post as Governor of the Bahamas. Anthony imagines the scene with a wink—Edward sighing, asking someone to please take that harmonica from the child. That playful spirit lives on in Split Infinity, when Stile plays a duet with the unicorn Neysa, echoing the sound of a boy discovering music, freedom, and imagination for the first time.

With 21 appearances on The New York Times Best Seller list, 30+ million books sold, and a readership that spans the globe, Piers Anthony has built one of the most prolific legacies in speculative fiction. Known for groundbreaking series like Incarnations of Immortality, Xanth, and The Apprentice Adept, he has always dared to blend genres, challenge conventions, and ground the fantastical in emotional truth.

And yet, despite this extraordinary body of work, none of his stories have ever been adapted for the screen—until now.

The Story, Expanded

We open on a high-stakes horse race—Proton’s version of the Kentucky Derby—held beneath a protective dome on a world hollowed out by centuries of overmining. Life on Proton is artificial and tightly controlled. Technology governs every facet of existence. Survival depends on obedience. Power belongs to the elite Citizens. Beneath them are the Serfs—disposable, voiceless, and without rights.

Stile, a celebrated jockey and strategic genius, has risen as far as a Serf can. He’s a master of the track and the game, a master Gamesman, and a crowd favorite. But everything changes in an instant. Just as he’s poised to win the race, a sharp pain forces him to pull up. His career is over. The tendons in his knees have been deliberately burned. Sabotage. And worse—someone is trying to kill him.

While fleeing for his life, Stile stumbles through a shimmering rift—the quantum curtain—and crosses into Phaze, a parallel world where magic, not technology, rules. Where Proton is cold, overdeveloped, and rigid, Phaze is lush, alive, and governed by unseen mystical forces. And here, for the first time, Stile has something he never had on Proton: power.

In Phaze, every person has a counterpart in Proton. The fact that Stile can now exist in both worlds means his alternate self has been killed. His sudden arrival marks the beginning of a much larger mystery—one that stretches far beyond his own life. Guided by the enigmatic Oracle, who warns him to “Know thyself,” and aided by a mystical allies, Stile begins a painful but necessary transformation. He discovers that within this world of magic, he has the potential to become a powerful magic user—one whose abilities could shift the fate of both realms.

As he learns to channel this power, Stile begins to uncover the truth: a dual evil threads through both Proton and Phaze—two faces of the same corrupt system. One rules through science, the other through sorcery.  And now, he’s caught in the center of it.

Back on Proton, broken and hunted, Stile is forced to enter the tourney—a brutal, all-consuming tournament with the game annex, that fuses intellect, physical skill, and performance. As a master Gamesman, he’s ready. But this time, it's not a game. If he wins, he earns Citizen status, gaining the power to investigate his would-be killers and protect himself in Proton. If he loses, he forfeits everything—his identity, his safety, and the chance to stop a rising threat that spans both realities.

Step by step, match by match, spell by spell, Stile has no choice but to adapt. He must learn both science and sorcery, strategy and self-awareness. Because to survive, he must always win—on the field, in the courts, and within himself. The stakes are no longer personal. As the forces manipulating both worlds close in, Stile must rise—not just to save his life, but to change the fate of both realities.

Proton and Phaze: A Tale of Two Parallel Worlds

Proton and Phaze are not two planets—but two versions of the same planet, far from Earth, these

two worlds / frames are separated by a mysterious quantum curtain. On Proton, science and

technology have stripped the world bare, forcing humanity into domed cities where control and

conformity rule. On Phaze, that same land flourishes with untamed forests, living magic, and mythical

creatures long forgotten by Earth. Each person exists in both realities—unless one version has died, allowing travel between the two. The curtain that divides these frames is ancient, its origins unknown... but it's not the only place it once existed. Earth, too, had magic. It had creatures now considered legend. What happened? Why does the curtain remain here, but not on our own world? These are questions that will echo through the series, as Stile's journey begins to unravel not just his fate—but the fate of all worlds once touched by magic.

The Game

At the center of Proton’s society lies The Game—a dynamic, ever-evolving competition that fuels both the planet’s economy and its culture. It is more than just sport or spectacle; it is the dominant force that defines status, opportunity, and influence. For the ruling Citizens, it’s a platform for power and manipulation. For the oppressed Serf class, it is their only possible escape from servitude—a chance to rise, to win independence, wealth, and recognition in a system otherwise stacked against them.

The Game encompasses the full range of human competition—physical, mental, strategic, and creative. Matches are determined by how two opponents navigate The Grid, a multi-layered framework that demands adaptability, foresight, and tactical skill. The challenges vary widely—from cerebral board games to grueling endurance trials—making it a test of the whole person. For

Serfs, victory can lead to Citizen status; for Citizens, it's a way to accumulate influence and manipulate outcomes to reinforce their dominance.

But beneath the action lies something deeper: The Game is Proton’s great equalizer and its greatest illusion. Everyone can compete, but not everyone plays under the same conditions. It’s a system of control disguised as meritocracy—where fame, fortune, and freedom are dangled just within reach, but rarely granted without sacrifice.

Socially, The Game is omnipresent—part gladiatorial sport, part viral entertainment phenomenon. The entire society watches, bets, and talks about the Game. It creates celebrities, heroes, and cautionary tales. Its popularity is not only cultural—it’s structural. It is the world’s entertainment, economy, and social mobility engine rolled into one.

This element is one of the most unique and exciting narrative features of the Apprentice Adept novels. For the series, The Game will offer high-stakes drama, emotionally driven arcs, and an endless stream of visually rich and varied challenges—each one a window into the larger world of Proton, the people who fight to survive in it, and the forces that seek to control them.

The Oracle:

In Phaze, where magic reigns, the Oracle stands as one of the realm’s most mysterious and powerful

forces. A future-seeing entity bound to a palace where no other magic is allowed, the Oracle delivers

cryptic revelations that are always accurate—but rarely clear. Misinterpretation can be deadly.

When Stile seeks the Oracle’s counsel, it sets his journey on a precise trajectory—one that will define not only his fate, but the fate of both worlds. The Oracle doesn’t merely predict events—it orchestrates them. It nudges characters toward key decisions, subtly influencing outcomes across timelines and realities.

Throughout the series, we come to understand that the Oracle, like the Game, is more than it appears. It’s not simply a source of wisdom—it is an agent of design. As characters chase their destinies, they unknowingly participate in a grand pattern—one carefully woven by a force that claims to see all, yet reveals only what it chooses.
